Position: Legal Research Assistant (Land Use)
Location: New York
The NYU Furman Center and Prof. Vicki Been seek NYU Law students to work as research assistants (RAs). We are currently accepting applications for Spring and Summer
2026, with an opportunity to extend into future semesters. The NYU Furman Center is a joint center of the New York University School of Law and Robert
F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service that advances research and debate on housing, neighborhoods, and urban policy.
The Center is currently seeking part-time legal RAs to work on a project to build a database of state land use laws across the country that promote housing development. RAs will be tasked with, among other responsibilities, finding and summarizing all state land use and related reforms in recent years (e.g. tenant protections), creating tags to code and categorize legislation, helping to design a legislative tracker, draft model legislation, and tracking recent developments in land use laws across jurisdictions (e.g. “Builder’s remedy”, Accessory Dwelling Unit, or ‘gentle density’ policies), and supporting research and writing for policy briefs.
RAs also will participate in brainstorming sessions with our faculty members, staff, post-doctoral fellows, and PhD and graduate students, and have access to informal and formal extracurricular training opportunities and networking. This position is open to 2L and 3L students. Ideal candidates exhibit an interest in or passion for housing and land use planning policy. These RA positions are flexible and RAs may work remotely, but we encourage RAs to be members of the Furman Community.
