We are seeking an experienced Phonics Reading Tutor to provide one-on-one online instruction to elementary students (primarily KG–Grade 3) using a Science of Reading approach.
Many of our students struggle with vowel teams and two-letter phonics patterns (e.g., aw, au, ou, ow). For example, students may not be able to identify the sound aw makes in “jaw” or the sound ou makes in “out.” Students often also have difficulty decoding multi-syllable words (e.g., breaking “example” into ex / am / ple and blending each syllable accurately).
The goal is to help students build strong decoding skills, increase reading confidence, and reach grade-level proficiency (Grade 2/3 benchmark or higher, depending on the student).
Sessions are delivered virtually.
Pay: $18 CAD per 45-minute lesson
OR $21 CAD per 60-minute lesson
Instructional Approach
• Each lesson targets one specific phonics rule or pattern
• Explicit, systematic phonics instruction aligned with the Science of Reading
• Guided decoding practice using controlled and decodable text
• Direct modeling of syllable segmentation and blending strategies
• Structured homework assigned based on the phonics skill taught
• Ongoing progress monitoring and review of previously taught skills

• Short vowel teams (aw, au)
• Diphthongs (ou, ow)
• R-controlled vowels
• Open vs. closed syllables
• Syllable division in multi-syllable words
• Blending and segmenting strategies

Qualifications
• Background in Education, Literacy, or related field
• Strong understanding of Science of Reading principles
• Experience teaching phonics and decoding strategies
• Experience working with early elementary students (KG–Grade 4)
• Ability to deliver structured lessons in an engaging and supportive way
• Reliable internet connection and professional online presence
